World War II has just ended and 8th grader Bobby Murphy faces several challenges. One is how to turn his group of wise-cracking friends into a winning basketball team without the aid of a coach or a gym to practice in. The other challenge is to figure out why his new, young teacher, Miss Delany, meets with a shadowy figure and then comes to school with bruises on her face. And then there’s the changing feelings Bobby has for his best friend, Joanie. Bobby is going to have to be on top of his game to figure it all out. (Grades 6-8)
