Jane Austen tells the story of Elizabeth Bennett, the second of five daughters in an average country family. Elizabeth is an independent thinker who refuses to marry simply for money, as most women did at the time. Elizabeth will settle for no less than happiness. When she first meets Mr. Darcy, an arrogant but wealthy man, she is repulsed by his pride. As time goes on she begins to see that she has terribly misjudged him and discovers that she may actually be in love with him. This novel is slightly challenging but a very rewarding read. (Grades 9 & Up)
