The second book in a quasi-series, The Year of Secret Assignments is an interesting peek into the lives of six Australian teens in the form of letters, diaries, and sarcastic responses to a condescending fill-in-the-blank notebook. The teachers of Ashbury high have decided that their students should engage in a pen-pal project with a neighboring school, but this neighboring school is rumored to teach only delinquents. This book has such a quirky tone to it—it keeps the reader laughing! This author has written two other books involving teenagers from the same school, which, altogether, create a highly engaging world...but this book is my absolute favorite of the three! If you’re interested, the other two books are Feeling Sorry for Celia and The Murder of Bindy Mackenzie—but I recommend reading this one first!  (Grades 7 & up)
