When the Taliban targets Yasmine’s Western-educated family, they decide to return to England but not before her parents are gravely injured and airlifted to a UN base in Kandahar. Scared and alone, Yasmine turns to her fourteen-year-old friend Tamanna who faces an arranged marriage. The two unaccompanied teens flee into the mountains towards the safety of Kandahar avoiding land mines and a suicide bomber. Yasmine’s decision to help the battered Tamanna by secretly switching places with her puts her back in harm’s way, alone and trying to stay alive. (Grades 7 & up)
