As one of Jane Austen’s most unique novels, Persuasion is a story of romance and guiding oneself through the oscillations of life. Anne Elliot found love in naval officer Frederick Wentworth; however, his low birth made him unfit for a daughter of the baronet Sir Walter Elliot of Kellynch Hall, or so she was persuaded by Lady Russell. While Anne never stopped loving Frederick, 8-1/2 years later it appears that he might have moved on and found another. The characters take on lives of their own, eliciting love, hate, jealousy, sympathy, and rage. Austen demonstrates the effects of allowing oneself to be persuaded too easily. (Grades 9 & up)
